📰 News we're reading

1. Viral 'Bongholeo' reveals motives after being charged following N.J. council meeting antics (nj.com subscription) — A costumed protester who calls himself "Bongholio" says he'll return to the next Cranford Township Committee meeting after being charged over releasing white vapor during public comment at the municipal building. He and a Cranford friend, known for silent breakdancing at meetings and a recent committee run, say their antics are political satire and a response to what they view as limits on public speech.

2. Desilting and Streetscape Plans Draw Questions at Cranford Meeting (tapinto.net) — Cranford officials are moving ahead with a Rahway River desilting project and a conceptual downtown streetscape plan that drew pointed questions at the Aug. 18 Township Committee meeting. Residents also heard about funding to repair the High Street pedestrian bridge and learned the town's latest municipal audit came back completely clean, reflecting strong financial controls.

3. New football classifications are released by the NJSIAA this week (unionnewsdaily.com) — Cranford High School will be the only Union County team placed in North, Group 3 for the 2026 and 2027 football seasons, meaning no county rivals in its playoff bracket. A full rundown shows where every Union County program landed as New Jersey's new classifications take effect starting with Week Zero games on Aug. 27.

4. Coming Soon to Westfield Schools: Repairs, HVAC Work, McKinely Renovations (tapinto.net) — A Cranford-based firm, M&M Construction Company, has been awarded a roughly $14.2 million contract for additions and renovations at Westfield's McKinley Elementary School. Westfield's school board also approved a $366,200 HVAC commissioning contract and tapped maintenance reserves for several smaller projects, all passing with strong support at the Aug. 25 meeting.
