Domestic Violence 101 Training Course Offered by the YWCA Union County Register Today!

YWCA Union County is hosting a two part introductory training course, Domestic Violence 101, starting on Saturday, April 18, 2015. The course will provide an overview of the signs of domestic violence and its impact on our community. While the D.V. 101 course increases community awareness, it can also empower individuals and service providers to appropriately respond to domestic violence within their particular professional role. Sessions include lectures, discussions, and case practice. Training Fees: $40 per session or $70 for Part I/Part II (*Part I is a prerequisite for Part II). Dates & Times: Saturday 4/18/15 (Part I: 10am-1pm & Part II 2-5pm); Friday 11/13/15 (Part I: 6-9pm) & Friday 11/20/15 (Part II: 6-9pm). There is also a more comprehensive 40 Hour Domestic Violence Training for professionals and volunteers that want to work directly with survivors in July and August.

Since 1978, the YWCA Union County has been providing services to survivors of domestic violence. Currently, the YWCA’s Emergency Domestic Violence Shelter is the only one of its kind in Union County. The YWCA Union County also provides services to domestic violence survivors, such as housing, counseling, legal representation, court advocacy, crisis response teams, a 24-hour domestic violence hotline, and children’s programs.

Domestic violence breaks all barriers of race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, gender and socioeconomic status. It is a crime that impacts our entire community. It is estimated that 1 in every 4 women will be effected by domestic violence in her life, which equals more than breast cancer, lung cancer, and ovarian cancer combined. The monetary cost of domestic violence in the United States in dollars has been estimated to exceed 5.8 billion dollars a year in medical and mental health services, loss of productivity, and loss of paid earnings. An average of 3 women per day in the United States are killed as a result of domestic violence. The YWCA Union County seeks to address these issues through comprehensive services as well as community education.
