"Exploring African Art": A PowerPoint Presentation by the Newark Musuem Speakers Bureau

The Newark Museum houses one of the most extensive and oldest collections of African art in the nation and is the only museum in the country with a gallery devoted to a permanent collection of contemporary African art. The Museum’s founder, John Cotton Dana, visited Africa many times and collected what is now the core of the Museum’s renowned African textile collection. The presentation will explore how beauty, humanity, power and spirituality are interpreted artistically across the different cultures of the African continent. Spectacular examples include gold jewelry from Zanzibar, a looming Epa Masquerade Headdress from Nigeria, and the intricate weavings of the Sub-Sahara. The program is presented in recognition of Black History Month and is sponsored by the Friends of the Cranford Public Library.
