Recovery Update: Officials To Decide By 7 p.m. If Schools Will Open Tomorrow

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Gayle Carrick issued a statement this afternoon update the public on the district's efforts to restore power in the schools.

"Power was restored this morning to another Cranford School however a transformer has recently blown resulting in the loss of power and heat to a school that was previously operational," Carrick said.

Maintenance crews are still working to install generators to power some of the buildings that lost electricity during super storm Sandy last week.

"We are in the process of installing two large emergency generators at two Cranford schools which we anticipate will be completed by midnight," Carrick said.

The superintendent has not made a decision as to whether or not schools will reopen on Thursday. Officials are taking a wait-and-see approach as a powerful nor'easter moves into the area that could dump up to five inches of snow on the area, and bring high winds that some fear could knock out power in some areas that were recently restored.

"We continue to monitor the storm hoping there will be no additional damage to our community or school district," Carrick added.

The superintendent said a decision will be announced by 7 p.m. tonight regarding whether or not classes will be in session on Thursday.
