Township Committee Lays Off Chief Financial Officer

Legislation does away with CFO's contract.

Last night the township committee passed an ordinance that will lay off Chief Financial Officer Jeff Theriault, who will be replaced by the township administrator, Marlena Schmid, for a period of 90 days.

When asked about the reasoning behind the move during the public comments section of the township committee meeting, township attorney Daniel McCarthy said the governing body did not have a comment at this time.

Theriault took on the CFO position last July after Tom Grady retired,  the Cranford CFO for 20 years.

Other layoffs currently proposed by the township committee include four employees from the Cranford police Emergency Services and two swim pool employees. Other savings may gleaned from attrition, or eliminating positions; two from the Department of Public Works  and six crossing guards. The responsibilities of the Police Emergency Services will also be absorbed into the Cranford Fire Department.
