East Brunswick: Cops Charge BMW-Driving 'Porch Pirate' With Theft

A search of Ring doorbell app owners in East Brunswick turned up other residents who said the same man hit their homes, said local police.

EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ — An East Brunswick man has been charged with stealing a FedEx package from a front door over the weekend, and he pulled up to the home to steal the package in a BMW, police say.

The man, Bernard Simpson, 29 of East Brunswick was charged with theft.

At 3:04 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 14 East Brunswick police responded to a home on Riva Avenue on a report of a package theft from the front porch. The called stated that while they were home FedEx delivered a package to the residence at 2:58 p.m. and placed it on the front porch. At approximately 3:00 p.m. the homeowner said they observed a black BMW pull into the driveway. The suspect exited the vehicle, then walked up to the front porch and stole the package.

The suspect then returned to his vehicle, backed out of the driveway and fled the scene, said police.

The home had Ring doorbell video surveillance, which showed a white man, approximately 5'6'', with a thin build and wearing a grey hooded sweatshirt, black baseball cap and glasses. The video was placed on the Ring Doorbell application, which received responses from other East Brunswick residents stating that the same thing occurred to them and they know who it is, said police.

East Brunswick police received a tip, acted immediately and headed to the suspect's possible residence. The BMW in question was located in the driveway of the suspect’s house, and Patrolman Agnes Garncarz observed packages in the rear seat of the car, said police.

Simpson granted consent to the vehicle where the packages were located, said police. He was also positively identified from the surveillance video and was placed under arrest for theft.
