East Brunswick BOE Member Resigns, Board Seeks To Fill Vacancy

Susanna Chiu's resignation opens up a spot on the Board. The position is unpaid, and the term of office is until December 31, 2023.

EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ — East Brunswick Board of Education member Susanna Chiu resigned from her post during the last BOE meeting.

Chiu’s resignation was effective Monday, April 24. The former board member said she resigned for personal reasons.

“I joined this Board about nine years ago. When I became board member people said to me ‘why are you doing this?’ I’m a product of public schools and I am who I am because of public schools,” Chiu said.

“My kids are where they are because of the teachers, administrators and staff. It’s just a small way to give back a little bit of my time to get to know everybody a little bit better, to help where I could.”

She wished the Board luck in overcoming the challenges ahead and thanked the school staff and administrators for their work.

Board president Laurie Lachs thanked Chiu for her time and service, calling her "dedicated" and “complete powerhouse.”

“You’re such an amazing woman and everything that you do is just wonderful,” Lachs said. “It’s very hard to not see you sitting up here with us. You’ll be greatly missed and you have really made a difference.”

Other board members thanked Chiu for her time on the Board and wished her well for the future.

With Chiu’s retirement, a spot opens on the Board of Education.

This position is unpaid and the term of office is until December 31, 2023.

The chosen candidate will be required to undergo a Criminal History Background Check prior to taking the oath of office.
