EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ —This year, the East Brunswick School District started a seventh to eighth grade football team. And to keep all student-athletes safe, the Board of Education did an equipment replenishment program.

Under this program, new helmets were purchased by the district that would help prevent concussions among student-athletes.

During Thursday’s Board of Education meeting, the district showed the community the new uniforms and equipment.

“The Board is buying very state-of-the-art equipment for our athletes. These helmets were actually rolled up not only for the seventh-grade team, but we replaced a lot of helmets at the varsity level this year as well,” Superintendent Victor Valeski told the community.

“Concussion prevention is a really big issue for us. And we're doing everything in our power to make sure that our athletes are well protected and well trained to prevent concussions.”

The uniform showcased was for practice and play for the seventh and eighth-grade team, and it included pads and a helmet that would be safer for athletes to use.

High school football remains one of the most popular sports in the country, especially in the South and Midwest. But states on the East and West Coast have lower participation rates, mainly due to injuries, according to reports.
