East Brunswick Schools Warns Of TikTok Vandalism Challenge

The school district is warning parents of a social media trend involving vandalism, stunts, or pranks on school property.

EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ — A destructive TikTok challenge has been causing issues in many New Jersey school districts. The ‘Devious Licks’ challenge encourages students to vandalize school facilities and post a video of it to TikTok.

In response to these pranks, the East Brunswick School District sent out a letter to parents asking them to have a conversation with their children.

“We are aware of multiple Tik Toc challenges being circulated on social media sites that are prompting students to engage in inappropriate or criminal activities, either against specific groups of people or their schools,” Superintendent Victor Valeski said.

“Parents, please have conversations with your children about the importance of following our Student Code of Conduct. We pride ourselves as an inclusive school community and that includes respect for each other, our staff members and our facilities that support student learning.”

According to a news report, a student in East Brunswick ripped a water fountain off the wall last week, as part of the challenge.

“We haven’t had any reports so far this week,” Valeski told Patch.

Another challenge linked to "Devious Licks" is the "Slap a Teacher" challenge that encourages students to hit teachers and staff.

What Is The ‘Devious Licks’ Challenge?

The "Devious Licks Challenge" is the latest viral trend to emerge from the social media platform. This challenge encourages students to participate in raucous acts of vandalism at school.

In response, students and TikTok users have shattered mirrors, stolen soap dispensers, fire alarms and football field turf, and intentionally clogged toilets, while filming to post on TikTok.

The trend started in September when a TikTok user posted a video of them stealing disposable masks, according to Know Your Meme. The video's caption read, with "a month into school absolutely devious lick. Should've brought a mask from home." The trend took off from there.

Usually, the video shows the TikTok user unzip their backpack to reveal their stolen goods, according to Mashable. The more difficult to obtain, the more devious the lick.

Recently, the Howell Township Public Schools district sent out a letter warning parents about the “challenge,” and encouraged parents to talk to children about it.
