Sleep is very important for your body and overall health. There is a relationship between poor sleep and unhealthy weight gain because sleep regulates hormones. When this happens, your body is told when you are hungry and feel full. It is key to eat right and be as well-rested as possible for good health.
According to the National Council on Aging, unhealthy sleep can interfere with daily activities and is associated with risk of chronic conditions such as diabetes and obesity. Additionally, getting enough sleep is also very important for your mental health, good immune system and controlling emotions.

Some contributors to poor sleep according to the National Council on Aging include:
- Since COVID-19, normal routines have been disrupted and patterns are more irregular with less activity, loneliness, and fewer gatherings.
- Feeling sick or in pain can also make it hard to sleep.
- Some medications can also keep you awake.
- Overeating and eating too much of certain foods can also cause sleep problems.
Whatever reason that may be causing poor sleep, there are some steps you can take that are recommended by experts to help. This includes reserving your bedroom as a place for sleep (i.e., keep out TVs, tablets, and computers), limit certain foods and beverages before bedtime, and exercise regularly.
