Shooting Threat At South River High School Not Credible

Breaking: Police swept South River High School Tuesday night after someone threatened a school shooting would take place there today.

SOUTH RIVER, NJ — School was in session as usual Wednesday at South River High School after a threat was made on social media about a possible shooting at the school. The threat was made Tuesday night, Nov. 21 on Snapchat.

“Who heard about a shooting that’s gonna go down in SRHS tomorrow,” someone posted on Snapchat, according to NJ 101.5. “This is legit, not even a joke.”

South River police were informed and they immediately investigated Tuesday night, which included doing a sweep of the high school with a bomb squad and canine units. At 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, they determined the threat to be non-credible and it was decided that school would be in session as scheduled Wednesday. Threats the day before Thanksgiving are apparently not uncommon; an annual Asbury Park-Neptune Thanksgiving Day football game — that has happened for the past 90 years — was canceled this week due to threats. "Out of continued precaution, the police will provide a strong presence on our campus (Wednesday, Nov. 22) for enhanced security."

No criminal charges have been filed. However, the incident has been referred to the South River High School for possible disciplinary action.
