Stay Off Ice In East Brunswick As Water Bodies Not Frozen Enough

The Recreation Department has asked residents to stay off ice as it's currently unsafe for ice skating and other activities.

EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ — While it might seem like the perfect season to go out ice skating or ice fishing, it might not be safe after all. At least not yet.

The East Brunswick Recreation Department has warned residents not to venture out ice skating as the ice on lakes and ponds are not frozen enough.

"For your safety - please stay off the ice on any body of water at all times. No body of water covered in ice is deemed safe to walk on, skate on, fish, or otherwise access," the Recreation Department said.

According to Township Ordinance 158-8: H, no person can engage in the following activities: Going onto ice, go onto the ice on any of the waters except areas that are designated as skating fields, and provided that a safety signal is displayed.

In most cases, ice must be 4 – 5 inches thick to safely support people, according to state officials. The appearance of ice can be deceiving, especially to children who may be tempted to venture out onto a frozen pond or lake.
