EAST WINDSOR, NJ — Up to 15 inches of snow buried East Windsor overnight as a powerful blizzard continued to hammer Mercer County Monday, knocking out power, downing wires and leaving roads dangerous as officials urged residents to stay off the streets.

The National Weather Service recorded 15 inches in East Windsor Township as of early Monday morning, with neighboring communities across Mercer County recording between 14 and 16 inches. A blizzard warning remains in effect statewide until 6 p.m.

A mandatory statewide travel restriction, first put in place at 9 p.m. Sunday, has been extended through noon Monday by the New Jersey Office of Emergency Management. Only essential personnel — including emergency responders and those in emergency situations — are permitted on the roads. The New Jersey Turnpike is exempt from the restriction.

"This extension is necessary due to ongoing hazardous conditions, including heavy snowfall, blizzard-like conditions, and strong winds, which continue to create dangerous travel conditions across New Jersey," NJSP said.

A commercial vehicle restriction is also in effect in both directions on all major interstates, including I-78, I-80, I-195, I-287 and I-295. The restriction applies to tractor-trailers, empty straight CDL-weighted trucks, passenger vehicles pulling trailers, recreational vehicles and motorcycles.

Gov. Mikie Sherrill, who declared a state of emergency on Sunday, urged all residents to stay off the roads. "This is a very serious storm," she said.

Nearly 130,000 customers across New Jersey were without power as of Monday morning as the wet, heavy snow downed wires and trees statewide. Multiple reports of downed wires continued to come in throughout the morning.

Wind gusts are expected to weaken as noon approaches, but conditions remain hazardous. Snowfall is expected to taper off Monday morning before continuing into the afternoon, with an additional 3 to 7 inches possible in some areas.

Residents experiencing power outages should contact their utility provider directly. Reporting outages helps restoration crews prioritize response.
