Video Shows Edison Man's Struggle With Police Before Death

The Middlesex County Prosecutor said the man was undergoing a mental health crisis at the time. He was not charged with a crime.

HIGHLAND PARK, NJ — A newly released dam cam video shows an Edison man struggling with Highland Park Police, just three hours before his death.

Daniel Nagahama, 28, died last June at a nearby hospital after he was found by police laying on Fifth Avenue in Highland Park. Police at the time said Nagahama became "belligerent and struggled with police." Now, a newly released dash cam video shows the struggle between Nagahama and police.

In the videos, obtained by NJ Advance Media, Nagahama can be seen flailing and pulling away from officers as they attempt to handcuff him. He was not charged with a crime.

Following the struggle, Nagahama is seen being carried away on a stretcher towards an ambulance. He died three hours later at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. His death was reported to the Office Of The Attorney General, in accordance with use-of-force guidelines.

"Nagahama was undergoing a mental crisis, and was not cooperative, he was placed in handcuffs for his safety, as well as that of the officers," Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew Carey told the paper. "He was transported to the hospital where he continued to be combative with police and hospital staff. Once calmed down, the handcuffs were removed and the police left the hospital with Mr. Nagahama under hospital's care."
