First Presbyterian Church of Englewood will feature an Easter weekend of worship services. First Presbyterian, one of the oldest churches in Bergen County, combines history and tradition with modern community outreach. "We have such a vibrant, diverse congregation – families of all backgrounds and ages who come from as far as Hudson and Rockland counties" said Pastor Richard Hong, who sees the church "as a place where community happens."
On Friday, April 18, 8pm, the deeply meaningful Good Friday Service of Tenebrae (Shadows) will include readings on the Passion of Christ and choral selections by the Chancel Choir, with violin, oboe and cello. This traditional service gradually leaves the room shrouded in darkness, symbolizing the tomb.
On Sunday, April 20, there will be two identical services at 9 and 11am celebrating the Resurrection, with music performed by the Chancel Choir, brass quartet, timpani and organist David Macfarlane. Rev. Richard Hong will deliver an uplifting Easter message. All are welcome to the service which ends with Handel's "Hallelujah" chorus sung by the entire congregation.
