Englewood School Officials Threaten Action Against Parents For $100,000 In Unpaid Cafeteria Food

Parents have failed to pay for breakfasts and lunches, officials said.

ENGLEWOOD, N.J. — School officials are threatening to report parents to the state if they don’t pay the $100,000 their kids have racked up in cafeteria food.

A newly-adopted district policy requires officials to send two notices to parents to try and collect the debt for unpaid food.

Parents who fail to respond to either notice will be asked to attend a meeting with a school official; parents who don’t attend could be reported to the state Division of Child Protective Services.

Superintendent Robert Kravitz said the end call is only utilized after "months of attempts" to contact the parents.

"It follows the same steps as if a child is never picked up from school," Kravitz said. "As per policy we could contact all the numbers on the emergency list and a last resort would be a call to the police. That does not mean we call the police on parents, we use this to insure safety for children."
