This excerpt is from Cornell Christianson's book "Holiday Skits & Contests" available on Amazon.

MOTHER’S DAY HISTORY

In 1870, after half a million soldiers died in the Civil War, a Boston woman, Julia Ward Howe, wanted to end all war and believed it would take mothers to do it. She believed men were the cause of war. She organized the first "Mother's Day" as a day for mothers to come together and be the leaders in creating a world without war.

So Mother’s Day started, not as a day to honor Mothers, but as a day to unite Mothers against war. Forty years later in 1910, President Woodrew Wilson declared the first national Mother's Day as a day to honor those mothers whose sons had died in war. By 1920, the holiday expanded to honor all Mothers and became one of the most successful holidays in America. Today, Mother’s Day is the busiest day of the year to dine out in a restaurant and the second biggest gift-giving day of the year after Christmas.

Julia Ward Howe, the founder of Mother’s Day, also wrote what song?
