Fair Lawn Police Officer Injured In Foot Pursuit: Police

A Fair Lawn police detective was injured while arresting a suspect Wednesday. The suspect was also taken to the hospital for evaluation.

FAIR LAWN, NJ — A Fair Lawn police detective was injured while pursuing a suspect on foot Wednesday afternoon.

According to police, officers responded to a 1st Street residence after receiving reports that a 25-year-old Fair Lawn man, Brandon Hernandez, was there, despite being barred from the residence.

Hernandez fled on foot once officers arrived, eventually circling back to 1st Street, where he was apprehended.

According to police, while officers tried to handcuff Hernandez he "fought and spit" on officers. Sgt. Brian Metzler told Patch that officers used pepper spray while attempting to make the arrest.

One officer, Det. Chris O'Shaughnessy was injured during the arrest. He was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

Hernandez was transported to Bergen New Bridge Medical Center "after pepper spray was used and for a mental health evaluation," Metzler said.

According to police, Hernandez will be charged with harassment, contempt of court, resisting arrest & 5 counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer.

He is under police guard at the medical center as of Wednesday afternoon.
