Do you know why we wanted independence? There was growing unrest in the Colonies concerning the taxes that had to be paid to England. It was called "Taxation without Representation" The Colonists had no representation in the English Parliament and had no say in what went on.

What ever happened to the 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence? Five were captured by the British as traitors, and tortured before they died. Twelve had their homes burned, two lost their sons. Nine fought in the war and died.

They didn’t fight the British, they were British citizens at the time, they fought their own government. They were men of wealth and education, who had security but they valued liberty more.
