'Peaceful' Demonstration Planned After Student's Anti-Israel Tweet Goes Viral

Rally designed to show 'support to the school administration doing their job to protect our children,' organizers said.

A ”peaceful and quiet” demonstration will be held outside of Fair Lawn High School Sunday at 2 p.m. in support of school administrators after a student claims she was called the principal’s office and reprimanded over her anti-Israel tweets.

Bethany Koval, a 16-year-old Israeli Jew, posted on Twitter that administrators questioned her because of her tweets, including one about a student who supports Israel ”unfollowed” Koval on the social media network.

“i’m soooo glad that pro-Israel girl from my school unfollowed me! I’m so FREE now like,” Koval’s tweet said, according to The Washington Post. ”[expletive] ISRAEL.”

Koval also posted audio recordings of a meeting she had with an administrator saying she could be disciplined under the state’s strict anti-bullying laws. Her account was private Saturday. Only followers who Koval, who goes by the Twitter username, ”benny,” confirms can see her tweets now.

The matter has garnered national attention and brought up online debates regarding free speech, student’s versus school’s rights, and pro-Palestinian sentiment. The hashtag #IStandWithBenny.

Adi Vaxman, the rally’s organizer, said on Facebook the rally is ”not about supporting any side of the political debate and not about supporting Israel.

“It’s about one thing and one thing only - supporting the administration in the actions they took to prevent bullying in the school. All parents should be able to feel their children are safe and protected from cyber bullying.”
