State Police Troopers Revive Retired Sergeant In Saddle Brook

The swift actions of state police troopers helped a retired sergeant survive a multi-car crash in Saddle Brook, officials said.

SADDLE BROOK, NJ — New Jersey State Police Troopers jumped into action to revive one of their own after an October crash, authorities announced Wednesday.

Troopers from Troop “B” Totowa Station used cardiopulmonary resuscitation to revive a retired state trooper who was injured in a "serious motor vehicle crash" on Interstate 80 in Saddle Brook, officials said.

On Tuesday, Oct. 6, in the area of milepost 61.8, troopers responded to a multi-car motor vehicle crash with injuries.

When they arrived, troopers observed an unconscious man being pulled out of his vehicle by an off-duty firefighter. It was later discovered that the man was retired Sergeant First Class Peter Visconti, who wasn't breathing.

"Without hesitation, Trooper Kyle Gorman retrieved an automated external defibrillator (AED) and began performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on the victim. After several rounds of CPR, the victim regained a pulse but he was still gasping for air and struggling to breathe," officials wrote in a Wednesday social media post.

Trooper Pierre Haddad, who is also an EMT, arrived on scene shortly after to assist.

Haddad used an oropharyngeal airway, a medical device used to open or maintain a patient’s airway, to assist in supplying oxygen to the victim until paramedics arrived to transport Visconti to an area hospital.

On Wednesday, State Police officials reported some good news as well.

"We are happy to report that due to the quick and decisive actions of Trooper Gorman, Trooper Haddad and several other good samaritans on scene, retired Sergeant First Class Peter Visconti was able to make a full recovery," they said.
