Justin Verlin earns Eagle Scout rank

Local Scout supports community, becomes Troop 200's 95th Eagle Scout

Justin Verlin achieved the highest rank in Boy Scouts of America, becoming an
Eagle Scout on Oct. 26. A senior at North Hunterdon High School, he is
the son of Adam and Carrie Verlin of Lebanon and is a member of Troop
200 chartered by the Lebanon Reformed Church.

For his Eagle project, Verlin designed and organized a team of a dozen
volunteers to build a fence around a newly created community garden on
Cherry Street in Lebanon Borough, sponsored by the Lebanon Reformed
Church. In total, 130 hours were spent on the project.

“I’m happy that this fence will protect the plants that will be grown in
this community garden,” explains Justin. “My hope is that working in the
garden to grow healthy foods will build a stronger sense of community
for everyone involved.”

To earn the rank of Eagle Scout, a Scout must be active in their troop,
provide leadership, earn 21 merit Eagle and demonstrate that they live
by the principles of the Scout Oath and the Scout Law. They must also
plan, develop and give leadership to others in a service project
benefiting a religious institution, school or community group.

Verlin’s path to Eagle Scout began 11 years ago as a Cub Scout in Pack 901,
where he earned the Arrow of Light as a Webelo. As a member of Troop
200, he served as an assistant senior patrol leader and patrol leader.
He has earned the BSA’s snorkeling and kayaking badges and snorkeling He
also had the opportunity to go on a high adventure trek to Seabase in
the Florida Keys and attend summer camps in Pennsylvania and Virginia.
In 2019, he was selected for membership in the Order of the Arrow,
scouting’s National Honor Society, earning the rank of Brotherhood,
before becoming Troop 200′s ninety-fifth Eagle Scout.

Verlin has earned 35 merit badges including: engineering, chemistry, emergency
preparedness, space exploration and personal management.

“I’m really proud of this accomplishment,” he said. “I’m the first Eagle
Scout in my family. I’m looking forward to helping my brothers Sean and
Max as they continue their scouting journeys and hopefully one day I’ll
be helping them achieve their Eagle rank.”
