School Bus Seat Belt Safety Law

Hunterdon County Freeholder John Lanza has called on the State Legislature to finally pass legislation (S-233) requiring school buses be equipped with three-point lap and shoulder seat belts, and will propose a resolution of support for the bill at the next Freeholder Board meeting.

Freeholder Lanza said, “Thousands of New Jersey students are transported in school buses every day. It is beyond comprehension that this legislation, which gives school children the same protections on a school bus as they have in their family car, has lingered for at least four years.

The legislation meets the recommendations of the National Transportation Safety Board and is just plain common sense. It’s about protecting school kids.”

The legislation, sponsored by Senator Sam Thompson of Middlesex County, is pending in the Senate Education Committee.

Lanza stated, “Senator Thompson is to be congratulated for his dogged efforts to protect school children via this bill for the past several years.”

Lanza has encouraged parents and concerned citizens to reach out to the Senate Education Committee Chairman, Senator Teresa Ruiz, to request that S-233 be voted on in Committee immediately.

Senator Ruiz’s office address is 166 Bloomfield Ave. Newark, NJ 07104
