50 People In Fort Lee Crosswalks Struck By Vehicles, 1 Fatally, This Year: Police

Police are doing more to protect people crossing the street in Fort Lee.

FORT LEE, N.J. — So far this year 50 people have been struck, one fatally, by vehicles while using crosswalks, police said.

To help protect people using crosswalks, the police department has reinstituted its Cops in the Crosswalk program.

The program involves a plainclothes police officer walking in a crosswalk and seeing if motorists stop for him or her.

Motorists who do not stop are issued summonses for two points on their license and a $254 fine.

"We want people to stop for pedestrians in the crosswalk," said Deputy Chief Thomas Ford. "We want people to know we are serious. About protecting our pedestrians."
