Bergen Mets Pitcher Jeurys Familia Suspended 15 Games For Domestic Violence Incident

Familia, of Fort Lee, caused 'bodily injury to another,' police said and was charged with domestic violence following the November incident.

FORT LEE, NJ — New York Mets All-Star pitcher Jeurys Familia has been suspended 15 games without pay for violating Major League Baseball's domestic violence policy.

Major League Baseball announced the suspension Wednesday afternoon on Twitter.

Fort Lee Police said in a complaint filed in Fort Lee Municipal Court in October that Familia caused "bodily injury to another" and that they saw a bruise on the person's right cheek and a scratch on the individual's chest. The complaint did not mention who Familia reportedly hurt.

Familia lives with his wife, Bianca, and toddler son, Jeurys Jr., The New York Daily News previously reported.

Familia appeared in a anti-domestic violence public service announcement days before the complaint was filed.

The video Familia appeared in shows him wearing a purple ribbon and saying in Spanish "I am not a fan of domestic violence." The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence sponsored the campaign.

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement that, "The evidence reviewed by my office does not support a determination that Mr. Familia physically assaulted his wife, or threatened her or others with physical force or harm. Nevertheless, I have concluded that Mr. Familia's overall conduct that night was inappropriate, violated the policy, and warrants discipline."

Manfred said that Familia has undergone 12, 90-minute domestic violence counseling sessions and received a "favorable" evaluation from the counselor.

Familia also agreed to speak with other players about what he has learned through this process, and to donate time and money to local organizations dedicated to preventing domestic violence and helping domestic violence victims.
