Mets Reliever Jeurys Familia From N.J. Charged With Domestic Violence

Familia caused 'bodily injury to another,' Fort Lee police said in the criminal complaint filed against him.

FORT LEE, N.J. — Jeurys Familia, an All-Star pitcher for the New York Mets, was charged with domestic violence this week, days after he was featured in an anti-domestic violence advertising campaign, a complaint authorities filed in Fort Lee Municipal Court shows.

Police said in the complaint that Familia caused "bodily injury to another" and that they saw a bruise on the person's right cheek and a scratch on the individual's chest.

Familia, 27, was charged with simple assault, the complaint states, and arrested Monday. His bail was set at $1,500. The Record reported that Familia had posted bail. The complaint was filed against Jeurys F. Mojica.

The Mets could not be reached for comment Tuesday afternoon.

Fort Lee Police Chief Keith Bendul told The Record that officers responded to a call regarding "a dispute" Monday at 2:22 a.m. from a Park Avenue apartment.

Familia lives with his wife, Bianca, and 1-year-old son, Jeurys Jr., The New York Daily News reported.

The video Familia appeared in shows him wearing a purple ribbon and saying in Spanish "I am not a fan of domestic violence." The Campaign is sponsored by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. Yankees manager Joe Girardi and Knicks legend John Starks also participated in the campaign.

Familia has been with the Mets for five seasons. He has a 7-11 record and a 2.46 earned run average.
