More Rain, Flooding For NJ In Ian's Wake: Weather Officials

Hurricane Ian met its demise in the Mid-Atlantic, but New Jersey still has some dreary weather in its forecast.

NEW JERSEY — Hurricane Ian met its demise in the Mid-Atlantic last weekend. But New Jersey will begin the week with some dreary weather, gusty winds and coastal flooding — partially thanks to a separate coastal storm Ian helped create, according to forecasters.

The National Weather Service predicts rain will continue through Wednesday night. Like last weekend, forecasters expect South Jersey to receive the most rainfall, with 2-3 inches projected through Wednesday in part of the region. Gusts, meanwhile, could peak at 46 mph Monday along the southern Jersey Shore.

Forecasters also expect flooding along the Jersey Shore to continue, with a coastal flood warning in effect until 9 p.m. Tuesday. The National Weather Service warned of "moderate" flooding along the coastline — primarily from Ocean County through Cape May County — during that span.

Jersey's shoreline could see 1-2 feet of inundation above ground level in low-lying areas, according to the flood warning. The National Weather Service projects large, breaking waves of up to 8 feet in the surf zone.

The worst impacts will occur during Monday's and Tuesday's afternoon high tides, weather officials said.

This level of inundation can bring widespread roadway flooding to coastal and bayside communities and along inland tidal waterways, the National Weather Service said. Many roads may become undrivable, while damage to vulnerable structures may begin to occur.

The coastal storm could contribute to beach erosion, according to AccuWeather. But fortunately for the Shore, the moon phase won't further enhance the tidal flooding, says AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Dan Pydynowski.

"A prolonged stretch of strong and gusty east to northeast winds will pound many beaches along the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic coasts into midweek thanks to the storm offshore," Pydynowski said.

The storm is comprised of pieces of energy left over from Ian, which devastated Florida and the Carolinas last week. The death toll in Florida reached 76 people, as 600,000 remain in the Sunshine State remain without power as of Monday morning. Four people in North Carolina died in storm-related incidents since Friday morning, according to Gov. Roy Cooper.
