It is no surprise that obesity has continued to rise and that today 3 out of 4 American adults are overweight or obese. Unfortunately, because the statistics are so high, most people do not recognize their own obesity. One is deemed "overweight" when their BMI is between 25-29. For example, a 5'4" woman who weighs between 145-169 pounds is overweight, and if she weighs 174 or more, she is in the obese category. This puts her at much higher risk for developing chronic diseases such as Diabetes, High Blood pressure, Heart Dsease, knee problems and many types of cancer. A 5'10" man is obese if he weighs over 202 pounds. (exception to this is if the person is very muscular due to working out with weights)
The first thing people must do is get on the scale and check out a BMI chart. Take a good hard look at the facts. Next, rather than continue on the path of disease...find out how to create health. Just because you are middle aged, and you have a family history of chronic disease, does not mean you have to succumb to the same fate. It IS possible to choose a different path. It is not easy when surrounded by a society who accepts obesity but by choosing to create health, one can look forward to a very different future.
