ENJOY AUGUST ACTIVITIES IN YOUR MONMOUTH COUNTY PARKS

August is a wonderful time to enjoy the vast array of activities the Monmouth County Park System plans each and every year. From seining the bay to making ice cream the old-fashioned way, there’s something for everyone to enjoy! Planning ahead for autumn? The Park System’s Fall Program Directory will be available on Friday, August 2 with registration beginning on Wednesday, August 7. Here’s what is planned for August:

 

Seining at the Bayshore

Bayshore Waterfront Park, Port Monmouth

Discover marine life while seining the bay. Meet on the beach. Open to ages 5 and up, under 18 with adult. Weather permitting. Sorry, NO GROUPS.  Free!

 

Boat Tours of the Manasquan Reservoir

Weekends & holidays at 2, 3, 4 & 5pm (now through October)

Wednesdays at 2, 3 & 4pm (now through August 28)

Friday, August 2 at 7pm

Manasquan Reservoir, Howell

These 45-minute tours are narrated by Park System Naturalists and include opportunities to view local wildlife. Plan to arrive at the Visitor Center 10 minutes early. The cost is adults: $5.61; children 12 & under: $3.50 (tax not included). Please call to confirm schedule as tours are both weather and water level dependent.

 

Parent/Child Morning Chores at Longstreet Farm

Saturday, August 3 at 8am

Historic Longstreet Farm, Holmdel

Rise and shine! Come help the staff with morning chores.  You and your child (age 4 & up) can milk a cow, collect eggs, and feed the animals. The cost is $15 per pair; $5 per additional person. Cash or check only.

 

Thompson Park Canoe Rental

Saturday & Sunday, August 3 & 4 from 9am-3pm

Saturday & Sunday, August 17 & 18 from 9am-3pm

Thompson Park, Lincroft

Canoes will be available for rent on Marlu Lake. All equipment provided; limited number of canoes available. Fee is $15 per boat for 1-3 people for 2 hours. Cash or check only.

 

You Can Sail

Sunday, August 3 at 10am, 11:30am & 1pm

Manasquan Reservoir, Howell

Drop-in for the opportunity to sail a 15-foot American sailboat. We'll provide the captain, you provide the crew. Open to ages 8 and up, under 18 with adult. Maximum three people per boat. $25 per boat.

 

19th Century Woodworking Demonstration

Saturday, August 3 from 1-3pm

Choose from a large selection of bisque fired pottery pieces to glaze and make your own. The cost is $6 per hour plus price of bisque ware; cash or check only. Pieces will be fired in about a week.

 

Historic Seabrook-Wilson House Open for Tours

Sundays, August 4, 11, 18 & 25 from 1-4pm

Bayshore Waterfront Park, Port Monmouth

Visit this house, which dates back to the early 1700s, and see displays on the ecology of the bay and local history. Free!

Hartshorne Woods Park, Middletown

Join a Park System Naturalist for a leisurely paddle on the beautiful Navesink River. Meet at the Claypit Creek section of the park. Novice paddlers welcome. All equipment is provided - single and tandem kayaks are available. Wear appropriate clothing that can get wet. Open to ages 12 and up, under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. The cost is $20 per person. Cash or check only.  First come, first served. Will be cancelled in event of inclement weather.

NJ Mycological Association Foray, Search for Mushrooms

We’ll take a walk through the park with members of the NJ Mycological Society in search of many varieties of mushrooms. Following our exploration, our experts will help identify our finds inside the Environmental Center. Free!

 

Cove Trail Hike

Saturday & Sunday, August 31 & September 1 at 11am

Manasquan Reservoir Environmental Center, Howell

Join a Park System Naturalist as we learn some fun nature facts. Participants must wear sneakers for this 2 mile walk and are suggested to bring water. Free!
