Get Rid of Mosquitoes Early in the Season

With summer not too far behind spring, you know the mosquitoes are on their way. Rather than be relegated to the indoors all summer, suffer bites when you do venture outside, or put your family at risk for deadly diseases like West Nile virus, Zika and Dengue Fever, it’s time to attack those mosquitoes where it hurts – now.

It’s almost like mosquitoes show up overnight. Actually, they do -- once temps hit about 50 degrees consistently, they emerge from hibernation and begin the hunt for blood. They love stagnant water and opportunities for food. They lay and incubate their eggs in non-circulating water, such as a birdbath, puddle, pond, clogged downspouts, and even in the creases of an old tarp or an upturned bottle cap.

Female mosquitoes bite humans and animals to make their eggs. They need the protein in the blood in order to do this. Check out these tips to ensure those yearly swarms of mosquitoes don’t take over your yard this year.

Remove Sources of Standing Water

Preventing mosquito infestation starts with removal of standing water. Don’t give them more opportunities to lay their eggs. You can:

  • Remove clogged debris within downspouts.
  • Cut down trees and other foliage that can shade your property from sun.
  • Overturn objects that can collect water.
  • Place coverings on boats.
  • Remove old tires or drill holes in them so the water drains out.
  • Smooth out creases in tarps and coverings.
  • Fill in low-lying areas where puddles and mud can form.
  • Keep your pool chlorinated.
  • Add mosquito-eating fish to ponds on your yard or anywhere within 100 yards.
  • Trim overgrown grass where mosquitoes can hide.

Control the Active Mosquito Population

For those active adults that make it through the previous step, you have additional chances to stop them. Try special mosquito traps that attract females by converting propane into a mixture of heat, CO2, moisture and a secondary attractant.

Set out citronella candles and tiki torches, positioning them around your patio area when entertaining outdoors at night. Use bug spray liberally on all exposed areas of the skin and don’t wear perfume or hairspray, the odors of which can attract the bugs.
