INTERNATIONAL CAPOEIRA EVENT CELEBRATES 10 YEARS IN JUNE

Discover the art and allure of Capoeira in June!

Long Branch, N.J. (April 27, 2016)--Performances from world-class Capoeira artists will be showcased at the Capoeira Sol Nascente USA’s 10th Annual Performance and Graduation event at the Instituto Educacional Brasileiro at 252 Broadway Avenue, Long Branch, on June 11 and June 12.

The first day of the event from 2 PM to 5 PM will feature many popular Brazilian dances as well as choreographed dances, which will highlight the rich history and traditional folklore surrounding Brazilian culture and the art of Capoeira, a dance like martial art that began 500 years ago during the Colonial slavery era in Brazil and has since become popularized across the globe as not only a dynamic art but also an effective conduit toward a healthier mind, body and spirit for young and old.

Admission that day will be $10 for ages 11 and older, and $5 for ages 10 and under. Doors open at 1:30 pm.

The second day of the event from 12 PM to 5 PM will concentrate on the art of Capoeira and the students’ graduation, said 20-year veteran Kasey Sanders, also known as Contramestre Baiano who owns Afro Brazilian Martial Arts and Fitness, LLC and is the first American in the Brazilian Group. General admission of $15 includes a sampling of Brazilian foods from Sousa's Grill on Broadway Avenue in Long Branch.

Sanders added, “We are expecting members from our Capoeira Sol Nascente group from Brazil, including the founder of the group from Brazil, Mestre Romeu who started the group in Brasilia in 1985, as well as neighboring groups from all over the Tri-State to come out to support this grand event.”

There will be also artisan products for sale including handmade bracelets, necklaces and talismans created by the students to help support the Pe Na Ginga Outreach project that provides healthy activities for the community’s youth.

Afro Brazilian Martial Arts and Fitness, at 10 Pearl Street in Long Branch, offers Capoeira classes for all ages starting from two years old. Founded in 2002, the school also explores other cultural dances such as the Fisherman Dance (Puxada de Rede) Samba, Axe dance, and Stick dances (Maculêlê and Dança das Bastões) as well as Tai Chi and Belly Dance classes.
