MANALAPAN, N.J. (APRIL 13, 2016)—Nearly 200 people including Senator Samuel Thompson (D-12th District) were in attendance on Sunday, April 10 at the 10th anniversary celebration for the Jewish Heritage Museum of Monmouth County at the Battleground Country Club.

For the past decade, the Jewish Heritage Museum, located in the historic Levi Solomon Barn at the rear of Mounts Corner Shopping Center on Route 537 in Freehold Township, has been educating, enlightening and preserving the Jewish history of Monmouth County involving immigration, escaping oppression, contributing to the community, and opening doors to freedom through workshops, exhibits and performances.

That commitment to service and loyalty to those the Museum serves was reflected in the celebration, which was co-chaired by Phyllis Solomon and Helene Cohen and highlighted by special guests including Cantor Gabrielle Clissold of Monmouth Reform Temple, who inspired the audience with her rendition of “You’ll Never Walk Alone” from the musical, Carousel, and longtime musician and entertainer Vic Schioppo whose energy was matched only by the enthusiasm of the crowd there that day.

Also at the event, appropriately called “Honoring the Past, Celebrating the Present and Building the Future,” 17 people who have been instrumental in the early establishment and growth of the Museum were honored for their courage, tenacity, commitment and love.

“They shared a vision and were instrumental and essential in the Museum’s success,” said Alice Berman who has served as co-president since 2013 and was formerly on the board of the Monmouth County Arts Council. “We have to remember that it’s important to look back before we can look forward.” Co-President Jeff Wolf, praised the board’s efforts to embrace opportunities and look forward to the future.

The honorees were Gloria Berman, Michael Berman, Helene Cohen, Gary Cohen, Mel Druin, Linda Friedman, Bernard “Nardie” Hochberg, Jean Klerman, Charlotte Kruman, Gloria Landy, Sid Marshall, Barbara Michaels, Rabbi Sally Priesand, Elaine Ruda, Caryl Sills, Charles Sills and Rabbi Brooks Susman.

The first decade’s achievements were highlighted in a video montage, produced by honoree Sid Marshall, which included an interview and tour of the building as it was being renovated and designed for the Museum’s use in 2008. The montage also noted that the Museum has presented nearly 250 programs, exhibits and events during these 10 years.

An unexpected highlight of the day was the proclamation by the Freehold Township Committee that April 11, 2016 was officially declared Jewish Heritage Museum Day.
