The Latino Festival of Monmouth County will again award hundreds of dollars this fall for the best essays on Latino contributions to society written by grammar school and middle school children. The essays should be between 500 and 800 words and can be on a broad range of topics centering on the contributions of Latinos to the United States.
Students must be enrolled in a school district in Monmouth County to qualify to participate.
Three awards will be given to the best essays from students between the 6th and 8th grades. An additional three awards will be given to students with the best essays in grades 3 through 5. The first place award in each category is $150, while second place is $100 and third place is $75. The evaluation rubric is attached to this press release.
“Students from across Monmouth County should be prepared to write in eloquent prose about the cultural, economic and social contribution of the various Latino communities to the broader society,” said Angel Matos, chairman of the Latino Festival. “The essay contest is one way the festival seeks to engage the youth from all different backgrounds to promote mutual respect and tolerance among diverse communities.”
Students interested in participating in the essay contest must email them to Suzanne Crandall, coordinator of the essay contest, at crandallmcm@msn.com by no later than midnight on September 27. Students must be sponsored by a teacher in their school district to qualify to participate in the contest.
The winners will be announced at the Latino Festival of Monmouth County on October 5 and prizes will be awarded by the end of the month. The Latino Festival of Monmouth County was founded in 2005. It was first held at the Park Avenue School in Freehold Borough. It moved to downtown Freehold in 2008 and now draws thousands of people.
