Top 8 Truck Driver Safety Tips

This year’s National Work Zone Awareness Week took place April 8 through 12, with a theme of “Drive Like You Work Here,” put on by the American Trucking Association and its Share the Road highway safety program. Share the Road professional truck drivers, with millions of accident-free miles under their belts, encourage drivers of all kinds to pay close attention when going through work zones.

Maintaining safety on the nation’s roadways is of critical importance. Check out these safe-driving tips for both motorists and workers during the spring and summer construction seasons.

Work Zone Safety Tips

  1. Remember blind spots: Never cut in front of a truck. Don’t linger near trucks while on the highway, as they have large blind spots in front, back and on either side.
  2. Heed posted signs: Warning signs are there to guide you through tough spots. Pay attention to them.
  3. Be on alert for changes: In work zones, traffic lanes and patterns may change, and people will be working on the road or on the shoulder. Also, speed limits are often reduced.
  4. Slow down: Speeding is the #1 cause of work zone crashes, so slow down when going through one.
  5. Avoid tailgating: Keep a safe distance between you and the vehicle in front of you. If they have to brake fast, you want enough time to stop safely without hitting them.
  6. Stay alert: Work zones are riddled with uncommon and unexpected obstacles, from barriers to cones. Pay attention to the road and your surroundings to avoid these obstacles as best you can. Let them guide you instead.
  7. Plan your trips: Schedule any trips with extra time built in, leaving early and expecting delays so you don’t have to rush when driving.
  8. Have patience and consideration: Work zone crew members work tirelessly to make sure the roads are efficient and safe. Keep this in mind when sitting in traffic near a work zone. They are not there to delay you and make you late for work; rather they’re there for your safety.

Heed the above tips seriously in order to stay safe on the roads. Making some simple safety practice changes can make all the difference within work zones. Stay safe this spring and summer!
