What to Know About Pool Filters - Pool Filter Marlboro NJ

When considering an inground pool, you may be wondering which kind of filter to get to go with it. Find out about the different types here.

What to Know About Pool Filters

If you are considering an inground pool, you may be wondering which kind of filter to get to go with it. In general, there are three different types of filters used in inground pools: sand, diatomaceous earth (DE) and cartridge. Each has its own advantages and drawbacks. The type you choose will depend on your budget, desired amount of maintenance and location-based factors.

What Do Filters Do?

A filter, installed in the pool’s plumbing network, traps dirt and debris as it passes through the filter. You get clean, filtered water that flows through an outlet pipe back into the pool. This runs over and over until you shut the filter off. Most pool filters should run between six and 12 hours per day.

Sand Filters

A traditional option that’s also the least expensive of the three, sand filters feature tanks containing sand. The water moves through the sand, which catches larger-sized microns. Then, you have to backwash the filter to send the filtered, clean water back into the pool. It’s recommended that you replace the sand in the tank every three to five years to boost filtration capabilities.

DE Filters

Similar in operation to sand filters, DE filters use grids, or fingers, coated with a DE powder to filter out the dirt. The powder, made up crushed sea shells and diatoms, captures dirt and debris at a much lower micron level than sand filters. The result is higher water clarity and safety, thanks to the stoppage of finer particles. You must add more DE powder every time you backwash. Take care when handling DE and breathing it in, as these particles can cause lung problems or skin irritation.

Cartridge Filters

Cartridges filters, one of the most popular types of filter, are available in single elements and multi elements (which contain up to four cartridges). Those cartridges trap the debris, comprised of spun polyester. The pleated material encases a heavy plastic or PVC core bound with a rubber-like plastic, trapping the dirt through its folds. This type of system involves the least amount of maintenance. You’ll need to clean out the filter about once a season, with no backwashing needed.

Which is the Best Filter for You?

You can discuss your needs with your pool service professional. But in the end, the type you choose will vary by how much maintenance you’re willing to do, your budget, and your priorities. From desired purification levels to long-term costs, there are many factors to consider. DE and cartridge filters are currently the two most popular when it comes to new inground pools today. But sand is still popular with older models and above ground pools because of the lower costs involved.
