Why I Walk To End Alzheimer’s: Beth McGovern

The Alzheimer's Association Greater New Jersey Chapter (AAGNJ) is spotlighting people and organizations who are making a difference in the fight to end Alzheimer's and all other dementia, by participating in the upcoming 2022 Walk To End Alzheimer’s (WTEA) - the world’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research.

Today we say thank you to Beth McGovern of Freehold, NJ, an AAGNJ volunteer community educator and participant in the Monmouth-Ocean Walk to End Alzheimer’s, taking place on Saturday, October 1 on the Bradley Beach Boardwalk, 5th & Ocean Avenues, Bradley Beach, NJ.

Beth’s extraordinary passion and dedication to helping all those affected by the disease has inspired and motivated others to get involved. The funds raised by her effort, and others, helps propel the Association’s mission forward - accelerating global research, driving risk reduction and early detection, and maximizing quality care and support.

Beth explains, “As a nurse, I have had the honor and privilege to care for our greatest generation - our seniors. It has always been my passion to help others, so I became a caregiver. Now my mission is to see that those living with Alzheimer’s and dementia get the very best care, with compassion and dignity. I walk so that one day we do not have to watch those we love, and care for, lose a lifetime of memories. I will not stop educating myself so I can continue to deliver the very best care for those living with Alzheimer’s.”

“I will never forget the countless loved ones, and their families, I have been entrusted to care for. They will have a piece of my heart for as long as I live. I will never forget all the hands I held and reassured, so they could feel safe. It is my honor and privilege to walk at the Monmouth-Ocean WTEA for those who cannot.”

More than 6 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's disease, the sixth-leading cause of death in the U.S. and the only disease among the top 10 that cannot be cured, prevented or even slowed. Additionally, more than 11 million family and friends provide care to people with Alzheimer’s and other dementias in the U.S. In New Jersey alone, there are more than 190,000 people living with the disease and 361,000 caregivers.
