NJ Boy, 12, Tased Unconscious By Family Friend: Police

A 68-year-old man was charged with aggravated assault and child abuse, among other charges, in connection with the incident, police said.

EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP, NJ — A 12-year-old Egg Harbor Township boy was shocked in the head by a taser and rendered unconscious on Monday, police said.

A family friend, 68-year-old Luis Surita Jr., of Atlantic City, had stopped by the boy's house on March 28, police said. The two were roughhousing, police said, when Surita struck the boy in the head with a taser and delivered one or more shocks. When Egg Harbor Township police arrived on the scene, the boy was unconscious from the shocks.

Surita was arrested and charged with aggravated assault, child abuse, endangering the welfare of a child, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a controlled dangerous substance. He was taken to Atlantic County Justice Facility.

The boy was taken to Cooper Hospital in Camden where police said he was reportedly conscious and in stable condition. He was later released from the hospital.

However, police said the long-term effects of the injury are unknown.

This case is being investigated by Detectives Richard Vogt and Katrina Cantell of the Egg Harbor Township Police Department Criminal Investigations Bureau.
