2 Indicted On Fraud Charges, Scammed Millions In Galloway: Prosecutor

Wei Song and Botao Liu, both of Egg Harbor Township, engaged in a social engineering scheme that scammed millions from at least one victim.

EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP, NJ — A pair of Egg Harbor Township residents were indicted on charges from a multi-year social engineering scheme that scammed one victim out of millions, the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office said.

In the scheme, Wei Song, 59, and Botao Liu, 52, cost the victim more than $600,000, millions in bad checks and identity theft damages, the Prosecutor's Office said.

Song was indicted for one count of money laundering – a first-degree offense; theft by deception – a second-degree offense; identity theft – a second-degree offense; and bad checks – a second-degree offense, officials said.

If convicted, Song faces up to 20 years in New Jersey State Prison as a result of the first-degree offense, and up to 10 years in New Jersey State Prison as a result of the second-degree offenses, officials said.

Botao Liu was indicted for one count of money laundering – a first-degree offense; theft by deception – a second-degree offense; and insurance fraud – a third-degree offense, officials said.

Galloway police previously stated that they believe that there are "numerous other victims" defrauded by the pair.

The two moved frequently, and Song often used the aliases Coco Li, Min Wang and Juny Li, police said.
