4 Indicted On Attempted Murder Charges In Atlantic City: Prosecutor

Three of the four also engaged in witness tampering after shooting the victim repeatedly in an act of gang retaliation, officials said.

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ — Four Atlantic City residents were indicted on 24 charges in connection with a shooting/attempted murder in Aug. 2021, the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office said.

Armaad Brooks-Chappell, 20, Adresce Jones, 19, Beatrice Chappell, 35, and Faheem Harris, 21, were charged with shooting and witness tampering charges, Prosecutor William E. Reynolds said.

On Aug. 12, 2021, Brooks-Chappell, Jones and a juvenile male used a stolen car and multiple guns to coordinate a planned attack on the 22-year-old victim, identified as M.B., in an act of gang retaliation, Reynolds said.

The three ambushed M.B. around 1600 Sewell Ave as he was walking on the sidewalk, Reynolds said. They shot the victim repeatedly, and he was hit multiple times, including in the face and shoulder, Reynolds said.

Chappell, Brooks-Chappell's mother, and Harris, also conspired with Brooks-Chappell to engage in witness tampering, Reynolds said.

The charges are as follows:

  • Conspiracy to commit murder, first-degree (Adresce Jones and Armaad Brooks-Chappell).
  • Attempted murder, first-degree (Adresce Jones and Armaad Brooks-Chappell).
  • Conspiracy to commit aggravated assault, second-degree (Adresce Jones and Armaad Brooks-Chappell).
  • Aggravated assault/serious bodily injury, second-degree (Adresce Jones and Armaad Brooks-Chappell).
  • Aggravated assault/deadly weapon, second-degree (Adresce Jones and Armaad Brooks-Chappell).
  • Aggravated assault/pointing a firearm, fourth-degree (Adresce Jones and Armaad Brooks-Chappell).
  • Endangering a helpless victim, third-degree (Adresce Jones and Armaad Brooks-Chappell).
  • Unlawful possession of a handgun, second-degree (two counts) (Adresce Jones and Armaad Brooks-Chappell).
  • Possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes, second-degree (two counts) (Adresce Jones and Armaad Brooks-Chappell).
  • Possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes/community gun, second-degree (Adresce Jones and Armaad Brooks-Chappell).
  • Receiving stolen property, third degree (Adresce Jones and Armaad Brooks-Chappell).
  • Using a juvenile in the commission of a crime, first-degree (two counts) (Adresce Jones and Armaad Brooks-Chappell).
  • Using a juvenile in the commission of a crime, second-degree (Adresce Jones and Armaad Brooks-Chappell).
  • Gang criminality, first-degree (5 counts) (Adresce Jones and Armaad Brooks-Chappell).
  • Gang criminality, second-degree (Adresce Jones and Armaad Brooks-Chappell).
  • Conspiracy to commit witness tampering, third-degree (Armaad Brooks-Chappell, Beatrice Chappell, Faheem Harris).
  • Witness tampering, third-degree (Armaad Brooks-Chappell, Beatrice Chappell, Faheem Harris).

Brooks-Chappell was arraigned on Aug. 15, 2022, and pleaded not guilty to all charges. Jones is scheduled for arraignment on Aug. 22 and Chappell on Aug. 30. Harris' current location is unknown, Reynolds said.

This investigation was conducted by the Violent Crimes Unit of the Atlantic City Police Department with the assistance of the Intelligence Unit of the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office, Reynolds said. Chief Assistant Prosecutor Allison Eiselen represents the State in this matter.
