The Atlantic City Area Religious Society of Friends in Galloway Township will hold their annual tomato plant sale on Mother's Day Weekend.

The Atlantic City Area Religious Society of Friends in Galloway Township will hold their annual tomato plant sale on Mother’s Day Weekend, Saturday, May 9, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., at their meetinghouse on 437-A South Pitney Road.

All proceeds will be used to continue with the restoration of the Friends historic 1828 Quaker meetinghouse.

Mother’s Day Weekend is the traditional time to plant tomatoes in South Jersey to avoid possible frost damage and to assure the earliest harvest, the group said.

Featured will be favorite, but often scarce historical and heirloom Jersey varieties such as Ramapo, Rutgers, Moreton, Boxcar Willie, Mule Team, Jersey Devil, Jersey Giant and others, which were once the industry standard that helped make Jersey tomatoes especially desirable for their superior taste.

All tomato plants will be sold in large 4-1/2” individual pots that will give growers a head start in their home gardens. They are organically raised in local nursery and will be hardy specimens priced at just $2.50 per plant, with quantity discounts available.

Italian Basil plants will also be for sale.

In the event of rain, the sale may be extended to Sunday, May 10, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The last two plant sales sold out and despite more plants being added to this year’s sale, it is anticipated that many of the varieties will again quickly be gone.
