10-Year-Old Arrested As NJ Deals With Another Day Of Threats

Two NJ school districts have closed because of a shooting threat. At least one other school locked down, and another had a shelter-in-place.

New Jersey dealt with a number of threats on Thursday that closed or locked down a number of schools, including two colleges. A 10-year-old boy was arrested in connection with a shooting threat, police said.

The boy was arrested after he allegedly made a school-shooting threat that compelled two school districts in South Jersey to close, police said. The Franklin Township School District and the Delsea Regional School District in Gloucester County closed on Thursday because of a "potentially threatening email" that was received by a Franklin teacher, officials said.

The Franklin Township incident began around 1:20 a.m. on Thursday when police received a call from a teacher who works at Caroline L. Reutter School, authorities said.

The teacher received an email from an unknown sender which referenced a school shooting to occur at the school on Thursday, police said.

The police department immediately contacted school officials and conducted a conference call to determine that the school would be closed until the legitimacy of the threat was determined, police said.

As the investigation unfolded, detectives sent subpoenas to the email carrier and IP provider to determine the origin of the threat, authorities said. The sender, however, continued to send emails to school administrators at that time that spoke of another possible school shooting at the Main Road School, which was to happen on Friday.

Detectives were able to quickly gain information regarding a possible suspect, and then arrested the 10-year-old boy who attends the Franklin Township School District for making these threats. The boy was not identified.

The boy was charged with third-degree terroristic threats and causing false public alarm. The juvenile will be released to his parents pending a psychological evaluation.

"At this time there is NO legitimate threat to the safety of our schools and students will be back to normal schedule tomorrow," according to a post from the Franklin police department.

Earlier in the day, Franklin school officials said the district was working with the police to determine the origin and credibility of the email. Further information was to be provided as it became available, according to a statement from the district.

"All students and staff are safe," the district said. "We are encouraging parents to speak with their children regarding this incident and provide the district or the Franklin Township Police Department with additional any information."

In a Facebook post, Delsea Regional High School said it was closing because of its proximity to Franklin.

"In an abundance of caution, the Delsea Regional School District will be closed today, Thursday, March 1," according to the post. "Police are investigating the matter and more information will follow as it becomes available."
