Fatal Accident Leaves Truck Hanging Off Route 42 Overpass: Police

A passenger in a car that was wedged under the tractor trailer after an accident in Bellmawr died.

One person was killed in an accident that left a tractor trailer hanging over the side of an overpass on a busy South Jersey highway Wednesday afternoon, New Jersey State Police said.

The passenger in a Jeep Wrangler that became trapped under the tractor trailer was pronounced dead on the scene, police confirmed Wednesday afternoon. The victim has not been identified.

The driver of the Jeep was taken to Cooper University Hospital. Their status was unknown. The driver of the tractor trailer was uninjured. The truck had been towed from the scene as of 5 p.m., and traffic was beginning to return to normal.

The accident took place at about 12:50 p.m. on Route 42 South, near Exit 13 to Route 55 in Bellmawr. The rear of the tractor trailer was left hanging over the Timber Creek Overpass.

No further information on the accident, which remains under investigation,was provided.
