An Introduction to POGIL (Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning) 5-week Mini-course

Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning, or POGIL, is a student-centered, group-learning instructional strategy and philosophy developed through research on how students learn best. The POGIL approach seeks to bridge the gap between concept and understanding by providing an innovative classroom and teaching model that allows students to work together to develop and construct important concepts of science, mathematics and other disciplines, as well as cultivate lifelong learning skills.

The goal of the POGIL approach is not only to develop content mastery through students’ construction of their own understanding, but also to enhance important learning skills such as information processing, oral and written communication, critical thinking, problem solving and metacognition and assessment. The POGIL approach remains effective because it allows students to not simply learn material, but to discover and understand fundamental concepts about the subject and about themselves as learners.

Meets Mondays 3/25 through 4/22/13.
