Residents throughout Gloucester Township will be asked to lock their doors, turn on outside lights, and spend the evening outside with their neighbors and police. Also, several Neighborhood Watch groups will be hosting a variety of special events, such as block parties, cookouts, carnivals, dessert tasting parties, bring your favorite covered dish parties, pool parties, and flashlight walks.

The police department is also introducing a "Light the Night" contest for residents this year.

"Bust out your holiday lights and illuminate your house," police said in the announcement. "We are asking our residents to show the criminal element that we will not tolerate crime in our neighborhoods. Most of us look forward to lighting up our houses for the holidays, now we have an excuse to light them up in August."

The police department will upload photos of the best and brightest house to its social media accounts.

Gloucester Township ranked seventh nationally for the 2018 event, and it has ranked first in New Jersey every year since 2012.
