Learn more about Retinal Diseases:Age Related Macular Degeneration, Retinities Pigmentosa and Stargardt Disease, Foundation Fight Blindness

The Philadelphia Chapter is proud to present an exceptional program that you won’t want to miss. Speaker Dr. Jean Bennett has a wealth of scientific knowledge and expertise in the field of molecular genetics of retinal degenerations.

Jean Bennett, M.D., Ph.D. is the F.M. Kirby Professor of Molecular Ophthalmology and the Vice Chair for research in Ophthalmology at the University of Pennsylvania, School of Medicine. Dr. Bennett studies the molecular genetics of inherited retinal degenerations with the idea of using this knowledge to develop rational approaches for treatment of these diseases. Target diseases include Retinitis Pigmentosa and Age-Related Macular Degeneration. Studies in her laboratory include identifying the molecular bases of retinal degenerations, generating animal models for these diseases, and rescuing vision in animal models through gene based treatments. Dr. Bennett was one of the first investigators to use viral vectors to deliver transgenes to specific cells in the retina and also led the first team to demonstrate proof-of-principle of ocular gene therapy. She has developed a number of strategies for gene therapy-mediated treatments for retinal disease.

You will have the unique opportunity to tap into Dr. Bennett’s expertise on gene therapy-mediated treatment of ocular disease during the personal question and answer session. This is a great opportunity to ask questions, learn about retinal disease, and connect with others experiencing vision loss. Family and friends are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Since the Foundation was founded in 1971, a high priority has been placed on addressing the needs of those living with retinal degeneration and their families. These activities are part of FFB’s Public Health Education Program which includes providing timely information about these diseases and advances in research to overcome them; identifying resources such as retina specialists, diagnostic services, and low vision aids and services.

Registration is free but seating is limited. RSVP by Tuesday, November 11, 2014 to Jennifer Geider, 212-244-1470 and JGeider@FightBlindness.org
