Man Chased Victim Before Slaying In Gloucester Twp.: Documents

They were both at a gas station just minutes before the fatal shooting, per the complaint charging a local resident with murder.

GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP, NJ — A Gloucester Township man was chased at a local housing complex before he was fatally shot last week, new documents reveal.

Nasir Tart, 24, was killed April 16 at the LaCascata housing development, according to the Camden County Prosecutor's Office. Hasan Battie, 21, was charged with murder a few days later.

Minutes before the shooting, Battie and Tart saw each other at a nearby gas station, according to the affidavit for Battie's arrest. Tart had been dropped off at 7-Eleven on Blackwood-Clementon Road and left the adjoining Sunoco with a small group shortly after.

The other people's identities were redacted from the complaint, and their relationship to Tart is unclear. A spokesperson for the prosecutor's office declined to answer questions about the case, stating that the investigation remains ongoing.

Video surveillance showed the group interacting with a man — later identified as Battie, of Gloucester Township. At 5:15 p.m., Tart and his group left in a white Jeep, while Battie walked toward the nearby LaCascata complex, the complaint says.

Minutes later, the Jeep traveled toward the back of the complex. Battie headed toward the 400/500 buildings and then walked with Tart. The suspect then chased Tart and fired a handgun at him near one of the development's buildings, the affidavit says.

Battie then walks back toward the 400/500 buildings, according to the complaint. It's unclear whether authorities have determined a motive or if Battie and Tart knew each other before the aforementioned events.

Police responded to the shooting at 5:27 p.m., finding Tart suffering from a gunshot wound. At 5:50 p.m., he was pronounced dead.

Battie was charged Friday with first-degree murder, second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon and second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. He was arrested three days later in Camden and remanded to the Camden County Correctional Facility, pending a pretrial detention hearing.
