Gloucester Township Victim Unintended Target Of Revenge Plot: PD

Kevin Carter, of Gloucester Township, was shot after getting in the way of a woman's plot for revenge against an ex-lover, authorities say.

GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP, NJ — A 26-year-old Gloucester Township man who was fatally shot in his home last year was the unintended victim of a woman’s desire for revenge against a former lover, court documents show.

In October, Rosalee Gomez contacted Chamberlin Robinson about a revenge plot against a former boyfriend, according to authorities. She offered to pay him and two other men to break into the ex-boyfriend's home on Yorkshire Road in Sicklerville and rob him, according to authorities.

But when the time came, the situation went horribly wrong for all involved. Kevin Carter, who also lived there, walked in right in the middle of the home invasion, and got into a fight with Robinson, who was amred with a gun.

Robinson fatally shot Carter, according to the affidavit of probable cause provided by the Camden County Prosecutor's Office. Detectives who responded to the scene found six .45 caliber shell casings in the home, authorities said.

On Nov. 1, Millville police informed the detectives that they believed Robinson had been involved in the shooting, and that he had been involved in a shooting in Millville on Sept. 19. Robinson had been arrested and was being held in Cumberland County Jail.

A witness told police they were with Robinson in the middle of October when Robinson received a call asking him to set up a home invasion in Sicklerville, according to authorities.

Gomez, who had known Robinson for about a month, was on the other end of the phone, and told Robinson she would pay him to carry out the act against the person who had wronged her or one of her friends, the witness told police.

Police said they learned that Gomez had dated a man who lived in the home. Gomez was no longer seeing the man, and was not in good standing with him, according to authorities.

Police also interviewed Gomez’s former boyfriend, who said he broke up with her in September after they had dated for about a year because she was cheating on him with multiple men. He called Gomez’s new boyfriend and said she had given him an STD, angering Gomez, according to police.

Gomez helped plan the home invasion, and drove Robinson and three men to the home, according to authorities. Gomez didn’t go into the home.

Two people were home at the time of the home invasion, and they spoke to police. According to authorities, one of them said they were taken from an upstairs bedroom and led downstairs by Robinson and one other man. Robinson was armed with a gun, according to authorities.

Once downstairs, the witness said they saw the third suspect and was told to lay on the floor next to the other resident, who was covered by a blanket. That person, who said the men were wearing face masks, was sitting on the couch when the suspects first arrived. The suspects told the witness to get on the floor and covered them with a blanket.

As they laid on the floor, Carter arrived. He was told to get on the floor upon entering the home, according to authorities. He refused and a struggle ensued. As they struggled, the witnesses heard six or seven gunshots. Carter collapsed in the living room, and the three men ran from the home out the front door, according to authorities.

The other two men who broke into the home have not been identified, according to authorities.

The witness who had been with Robinson when he received the call from Gomez saw him a few days after the incident, according to authorities. At that point, Robinson said the intention was only to rob the man who had jilted Gomez, but “things went left” and he had shot someone multiple times, according to authorities.

Gomez also told one of the witnesses detectives interviewed that everything went wrong, the wrong person got hurt and there was some unfinished business.

Gomez had been driving around the area at the time of the home invasion. Her car was caught on security camera footage in the area, authorities said. After the shooting, she took Robinson and the other two men back to Millville and paid them, according to authorities.

The United States Marshall Service arrested Gonzalez at her home on Dec. 31, 2019, a little more than two months after the fatal shooting, according to authorities. She was remanded to the Camden County Jail.

In the days after his death, Carter was remembered by his friends on social media.

"Kevin had a heart that was so pure, genuine, and most of all loving," one friend wrote in a Facebook post. "All he wanted to do was give back to the community and help the family/kids in need. He went to school to better himself. ... He was one of the most selfless people you would ever meet. He had a smile that lit up the darkest room like the stars do on a dark night. He was always very respectful and could always make you laugh."
