GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP, NJ — A group of Highland Regional High School alumni is organizing a Listen and Remember Memorial in the wake of George Floyd's death.

The memorial will take place on Sunday. It will take place at Gloucester Township Community Park on Turnersville-Hicktsown Road, 7 p.m.

The event will give an opportunity for the community to listen to black members in Gloucester Township and the surrounding communities, according to organizers.

“Amidst all of the tragedy and injustice in the world today, we in Gloucester Township would like to take the time to shed a light on our black community,” the organizers wrote on their Facebook page announcing the event. “We invite you to come listen and reflect over the words of our own community members and other special guests in the importance of the Black Lives Matter movement. This is a time to absorb the words and learn from them, to create a safer community where diversity is celebrated and not targeted.”

Peaceful protests have been taking place throughout the country following George Floyd's death. Floyd, 46, died after Chauvin kneeled on his neck for nearly nine minutes. Organizers said this event will follow guidelines on social distancing and masks will be worn to help prevent the further spread of the coronavirus. The event will also stream online.

“Please bring your masks and leave your weapons, as this is a peaceful memorial,” organizers said. “We stand in solidarity with Black Lives Matter against the abuse of power and weaponry by police.

“We will end this event with a candlelight ceremony to remember all the black lives that were taken by police brutality since 2013. We will also allow participants to register to vote, which is an essential step in making changes for the better in our country.”
