Susan Hagen Exhibit Coming To Camden County College

The exhibit includes works from Hagen's "Teenager Project" and "Citizens (People of Philly)."

GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP, NJ — “People Power: The Recent Work of Susan Hagen,” an exhibition featuring works from Hagen’s “Teenager Project” and “Citizens (People of Philly)” series, goes on display at the Marlin Gallery at Camden County College this week.

The exhibition runs from March 8-April 7. An Artist Reception will take place on March 8, 5 p.m.-7 p.m.
It includes drawings and sculptures that explore the lives of teenagers and the ordinary people and subcultures who make up the fabric of urban life in Philadelphia.

Hagen’s fascination with teenagers began when her son was a teen. That fascination then evolved into an investigation of the richly diverse community around her. As a long-time resident of the City of Philadelphia, Hagen now feels more and more connected to the place she lives and, especially recently, inspired by the civic pride of the City and the urgency of the discourse in public life.

Hagen’s process as a sculptor is labor intensive and technically challenging. She deftly combines the traditional fine-art techniques of Northern European carved-wood sculpture and oil painting, with “methodology stolen from the prosaic craft forms of miniature crime scenes, doll houses and historical dioramas.”

In all of her recent work, Hagen explores the specifics of time, place, and identity.

“Like James Joyce in 'Ulysses,' I want to delve deeply into this particular time and place,” Hagen said in the announcement issued last week.

Hagen’s artwork is represented by the Schmidt Dean Gallery in Philadelphia, and has been exhibited in museums and galleries throughout the United States. It has been generously supported by the Independence Fellowships in the Arts of Philadelphia and the Ballinglen Arts Foundation of Ballycastle, County Mayo, Ireland. All works are copyrighted by the artist and are shown courtesy Schmidt Dean Gallery, Philadelphia PA.
