📰 News we're reading

1. Who will be elected to fix Hackensack schools' budget woes? (northjersey.com) — Hackensack voters will choose three school board members this November who must confront a multimillion-dollar budget crisis that has already led to more than 150 staff layoffs. Two recently appointed trustees and two other candidates are vying for the seats, with deep ties to Hackensack schools and a shared focus on stabilizing finances while protecting students’ education and taxpayers’ money.

2. School Safety Tips for Drivers, E-Bike Riders & Pedestrians: Learn More (tapinto.net) — Hackensack police are stepping up school safety as classes resume, warning e-bike riders they’ll soon move from warnings to summonses for breaking New Jersey’s new rules. Class 3 officers, patrol officers, and detectives will be stationed at all Hackensack public schools, including a dedicated school resource officer at the high school, to keep students and traffic safe throughout the year.

3. Hackensack firefighters respond to numerous calls during Sunday flooding (news12.com) — Hackensack residents saw intense flash flooding Sunday that kept city firefighters and public works crews busy for about five hours, assisting stranded motorists and flooded homes around Main Street, Johnson Avenue, and Kinderkamack Road. With the department’s high-water vehicle out of service, South Hackensack helped with rescues and barricades, and firefighters even saved a trapped family of raccoons once waters began to recede.

4. Religious billboards in NJ aim to save the souls of commuters (northjersey.com) — Drivers near Hackensack on Route 4 are being greeted by a new Rosh Hashanah billboard from Chabad of Hackensack, showing smiling children and wishing everyone a Shana Tova. The sign is part of a broader wave of religious and cultural “billboard evangelism” across New Jersey, but this one focuses on boosting Jewish pride and joy amid rising negativity and hate.
